Amazing Grace

Tomorrow sees the UK release of Amazing Grace (trailer here), based on the true story of William Wilberforce and his part in the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act almost exactly 200 years ago.

Unfortunately, slavery is still around even now and there's a site here dedicated to making it a thing of the past.

Audio search

I find that quite often the best and most useful information is not written down, but passed on by word of mouth. With the advent of podcasts it would of course be good to be able to search through those too. Well, Podzinger does just that. With some voice recognition technology, you can search in their database of audio (and video) and the results show how far into the media the word you're looking for turns up!

Google's missing a trick here. Though having bought up several companies recently (namely Adscape and Trendalyzer) maybe they'll target them for purchase too?

How to cure a sore throat

I'm not a doctor, so I'm not sure if I believe it, but this guy claims that gargling with cayenne powder instantly heals a sore thoat. Worth a try I suppose!

Has the budget left you better off?

Gordon Brown announced the budget today. The change getting the headlines is the 2p tax cut, but are you really better off? Find out using the budget calculator!

International anti racism day 2007

From the official UN website:

"The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination"

Peccadillos on pedalos

It's been an eventful World Cup so far with lots of highs like the six sixes in an over by Hershel Gibbs. There have been lows too, such as Bob Woolmer's passing. Pakistan and Scotland are already out, and Andrew Flintoff (so the newspapers say) "got into difficulties" after falling off a pedalo. More than a mere peccadillo really. What's he playing at? England fans have had enough. We don't deserve to win this tournament - teams that display some fight do, like Bermuda, who have players like Dwayne Leverock (pictured) fast becoming legends. He took a truly excellent diving catch yesterday. And Ireland who beat Pakistan deserve high praise - high praise indeed... but not England.

Concept t shirts

Here's a plug for someone who bought Flix this week - Concept T-Shirts. The t-shirts show a lot of creativity, including a Christian themed section. They've also got a blog and are involved in pray4u.co.uk - "trying to take prayer to people who don't really know about Jesus" so good for them!

Young Motion Plymouth

Discovered today that Plymouth City Council is organising an event called Young Motion Plymouth where people can show off their "moving image making talents" and one of the tools suggested for making an entry is software from Nimisis.com, namely Flix. Thanks for the mention. I look forward to seeing some creative movies result from the festival!
