San Francisco bay area time lapse

Here's a video made using Ripper which captured images every few minutes from a webcam in San Francisco. I like the end where you can see the planes coming in to land.

Beating the Bookies by Ruslan

beating the bookiesTimes Listener Crossword 3970 was a great one! Most enjoyable. I was going to save it for the flight tomorrow but just got stuck into it! Shown on the right is what I came up with.

Engadin ski marathon 2008

Been training for the last couple of months now and the day is fast approaching when I'll be hauling myself around some snowy part of Switzerland with a few thousand other blokes with skis for 26.2 miles. No, it is NOT downhill. Search on YouTube if you'd like to see what it's all about. Will report back when I return in a week and a bit!

The great quake

There was an earthquake in UK early yesterday. Officially recorded to be 5.2 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter in the midlands. I was awake when it happened, and it was possibly the smallest quake I've ever been aware of, yet it still makes the front page of the newspapers here. What a complete joke! Thankfully no one was hurt, but something above 6.0 (10 times worse than 5.0 by the way) is more to shout about...

Google search by date indexed

There are still some searches for which Google isn't too brilliant. For example, you can't search for certain special characters and you can't look for files (other than images) by filesize. However, there is a fantastic new improvement - you can now find pages by the date they were added to the Google index. This is very useful because sometimes it's hard to tell when a page was written - not all pages are like press releases and have a date on them! So, if you want to filter out old news or maybe see which pages have been recently indexed for a particular site, you can by adding the "as_qdr" parameter. Append your seach with "&as_qdr=1d" for pages found in the last 24 hours, "&as_qdr=1w" for the past week and "&as_qdr=1y" for the last year. (The 1's can be adjusted to any number and therefore length of time you like).

For example, to find new pages that have been talking about a pagerank update, you might search: http://www.google.com/search?q=pagerank+update&as_qdr=d1 or what new software has been added to a download site in the last week: http://www.google.com/search?q=site:download.omani.ac&as_qdr=w1.
