Surnames

Random thought, presumably people first started giving themselves surnames according to their trade; for example, modern day Smiths actually used to be smiths; like blacksmiths and goldsmiths. Bakers were bakers and the first Mr Butler was a butler. So what about people with the surname King? No need to call youself Henry King VIII is there!? If you're a Henry and a king then you're just Henry the whatever. I think the first Kings had their names changed by deed poll from Princes who had large egos. Nobody's called John Prince are they? (Except of course "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince", now just "The Artist" - sorry your majesty...). Self proclaiming yourself King is fair enough though. Think about it, there have been some great Kings - Martin Luther King, Billie Jean King, B. B. King (B. B. stands for "Blues Boy." How cool is that!)... Tyrannosaurus Rex...

Tags: surname
